Self Portrait
I've been wanting to do a grittier style of portrait so tried some overhead lighting with a small(ish) light source gridded to focus the light. I only had me to practice on and didn't get the framing quite right, but here's the test shot.
ND Filter
For my birthday I got a Gobe ND1000 77mm MRC 16-Layer ND Filter. It cuts out ten stops of light, so only 0.098% of the light is getting through. I went to the beach to do a test shot and see what I might learn.
My lessons learned were;
- There needs to be a lot more motion in the subject than I found with the sea today, which was pretty still.
- The camera tends not to want to focus with the filter on.
Really I got it for waterfalls in New Zealand later in the year, but the test was fun and I'll try it out in other places before October.

Flashback: California
I was on a road trip with James back in 2011. We were driving from California to New York (via the Deep South and up to Canada). I took this photo at Pismo Beach in California and came across it this morning. I still like it a lot. I feel it has a nice simplicity to it. Quite minimalist. A lot of verticals.
